Overview:
Proficient English and Chinese skills (written and verbal) are required. All application materials must be presented in English.
The Company is seeking a strategic and results-oriented individual to join our team to build our Silverchair platform and ScholarOne Manuscripts business presence in China and the broader APAC region. The primary focus of this role will be in China, though the role will have a secondary responsibility developing key opportunities elsewhere in the region.
Reporting to Silverchair’s Chief Business Development Officer, this role focuses on identifying new customer-specific business development opportunities, building strategic partnerships with publishers, institutions, regulators, executing business development strategies and signing new clients for Silverchair products to achieve the new business sales target. In our highly matrixed organization, this individual contributor will collaborate with the APAC team and cross-functional teams globally to achieve regional targets while navigating market dynamics and government policies.
Essential Functions:
1. Strategic Planning:
- Conduct comprehensive market research, competitor and trend analysis to identify business opportunities for the Silverchair products in China and the broader APAC region, collaborating with local team and agents.
- Develop and execute a new business development plan aligned with the company's overall goals, covering business potential, business model and technology compliance among other key strategic areas
2. Partnership Management:
- Serve as a key liaison between Chinese publishers and Silverchair's product teams, translating customer requirements and market-specific needs into actionable product feedback that shapes our platform and ScholarOne roadmaps.
- Establish relationships with regulatory bodies overseeing STM journals, such as relevant departments within the Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and other related authorities.
- Strengthen and develop high-level relationships with decision-makers and stakeholders of publishing workflows and hosting platforms, including but not limited to C-level of publishers, publishing regulatory departments of top universities and research institutions in China.
- Build and nurture long-term, strategic relationships with key opinion leaders, associations in scholarly publishing.
3. Business Development:
- Develop and execute sales plan to achieve Silverchair platform and ScholarOne Manuscripts new business growth and revenue targets in China and elsewhere in APAC.
- Coordinate with the Business Development Solutions Engineers for each product to assemble customer-specific strategic solutions from Silverchair's product offerings.
- As needed, attend key conferences and industry events to identify and advance the dialogue with prospective customers, and to gain awareness of market trends and competitor activities.
- Continuously refine the business development plan based on the evolving market dynamics and government policy updates.
- Provide feedback to both the global marketing and the product teams on the unique needs of potential customers in APAC.
- Collaborate closely with the APAC team to achieve overall regional growth objectives.
- Effectively record all prospect and customer interactions in Salesforce to enable accurate reporting at all stages of the pipeline, and use the CRM to effectively manage and drive actions.
- Perform additional duties as required to support departmental and company goals.
- To support these activities, the person in this role must:
- Acquire and maintain a detailed knowledge of Silverchair products, systems, methodologies, and services
- Keep up to date on industry-wide technology and product/standard initiatives and developments—particularly changes impacting Silverchair's product features and sales competitiveness
- Develop and maintain communications in a cooperative and professional manner with all levels of staff, prospects, and customers
Required Skills:
- 10 + years of experience in Sales or Business Development within STM publishing market in China.
- Experience in managing and achieving multi-million-dollar business targets.
- Strong networks within China’s STM publishing ecosystem, including publishers, key opinion leaders and publishing associations.
- Deep understanding of STM publishing landscape in China, particularly hosting platforms and peer-review systems.
- Proven track record to maintain relationships with government academic journal regulatory bodies of various levels.
- Keen awareness of government policy changes and the ability to provide informed recommendations and adaptive strategies.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage, influence, and build credibility at senior and executive levels.
- Proven ability to collaborate with relevant internal functions to develop and execute new business development plans.
- Extensive experience in the development and negotiation of large and complex business proposals
- Fluency in Chinese and English (both written and spoken) is required.
- Experience working across APAC region is a plus
- Experience in operating or promoting large-scale journal platforms is a plus
