Overview
The Systems Administrator maintains and optimizes our IT infrastructure to ensure reliable, secure, and high-performing systems. This role provides critical technical support that enables the organization to operate efficiently while maintaining robust security standards.
Essential Responsibilities
Infrastructure Management
Maintain system reliability and security through patch management and software/OS updates.
Administer and monitor virtual servers to ensure optimal performance and rapid issue resolution
Manage virtual network appliances and firewalls to maintain a stable and secure network environment
Configure and maintain monitoring tools to proactively identify performance and security issues
Analyze system performance trends and recommend capacity planning and optimization strategies
Security & Data Protection
Implement and enforce security policies including access controls, firewall configurations, and endpoint protection
Configure and manage backup and disaster recovery solutions to ensure business continuity
Monitor security events and respond to potential threats
User Support & Collaboration
Provide technical support to end-users, troubleshooting hardware and software issues
Collaborate with vendors and service providers to resolve technical challenges and procure necessary resources
Maintain comprehensive documentation of IT systems, configurations, and procedures
AI Integration & Innovation
Maintain current knowledge of AI tools and ethical applications in academic publishing and scholarly communications
Apply prompt engineering skills to leverage AI tools effectively for workflow automation and efficiency gains
Exercise sound judgment in determining appropriate use cases for AI assistance
Ensure compliance with organizational AI usage policies and data protection requirements
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
Minimum 2 years of hands-on systems administration experience
Technical Skills
Proficiency with Windows and Linux/Unix operating system administration
Experience with virtualization technologies (Azure & AWS VMs)
Strong understanding of network protocols, services, and security best practices
Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS & Azure)
Expertise in troubleshooting complex technical issues
Professional Skills
Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities
Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
Customer service orientation with a focus on user enablement
Preferred Qualifications
Industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, AWS Certified SysOps Administrator, or similar credentials
Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools and automation frameworks
